Just like humans, animals can suffer from congenital or acquired limb deficiencies. As orthotics, prosthetics, and artificial limbs help human patients return to a normal life, advancements in veterinary medicine have expanded this field for animals as well. Today, with the development of various assistive devices, efforts are being made to improve the quality of life for disabled animals.

Central Veterinary Hospital of Tehran

The Central Veterinary Hospital is the first in the country to establish a dedicated Orthotics and Prosthetics Department, staffed by a veterinarian with specialized education in rehabilitation. This department designs and provides a variety of prosthetics, orthotics, wheelchairs, and artificial limbs for disabled animal patients.

These devices are often used either before or after surgery, and include items such as medical knee and wrist braces, supportive braces for correcting congenital deformities, and specialized braces for the patella and cruciate ligaments, among others.

Patients in need of these services can either visit the department directly or be referred by their attending veterinarian.

Frequently Questions

Can an orthotic device improve functional performance?
Orthotic and prosthetic devices can significantly enhance functional performance depending on the patient’s needs. These devices may be either pre-fabricated or custom-made. After examining the patient and thoroughly assessing their condition, a specialized physiotherapist will prescribe the appropriate orthotic. Many patients can benefit from ready-made orthotics, which can usually be adjusted to fit the animal properly. These standard orthotics and prosthetics are commonly available in small, medium, and large sizes.
What is an orthotic device?
Orthotic devices are tools designed to improve biomechanical function, encourage proper joint alignment, or protect limbs. They are tailored to meet the specific needs of each patient.
What is a prosthetic device?
Prosthetic devices are tools used to replace limbs or joints such as the knee, wrist, elbow, and finger joints. They are designed to restore function and mobility in cases of limb loss or severe joint damage.
What is the difference between a prosthetic and an orthotic device?
Orthotic devices are typically used temporarily to improve the function of existing limbs, while prosthetic devices are permanent solutions designed to replace lost limbs. Orthotics support, align, or protect a limb, whereas prosthetics substitute for a missing body part.
