- Ultrasound: In this method, sound waves are used to generate images of the pet’s internal systems. The sound waves bounce back and forth to create the image. There is no risk from X-rays, so it can be performed multiple times.

Application of Ultrasound in Pets

- Radiology: In most cases, considerable primary changes occurring in the thoracic cavity, vertebrae, front and rear limbs or simply the legs, as well as the skull, require radiology to evaluate the overall area or potentially examine fractures, hemorrhages, displacements of organs, and superficial muscle ruptures. Of course, radiology is also applicable in the abdominal area and allows visibility and differentiation of parts surrounded by bone or air.
- Ultrasound: The most common use of ultrasound is for the abdominal area, but in some cases, it may also be applied to the chest, throat, and limbs. However, its main application in small animals or pets is in the abdominal area, allowing for a detailed examination of the structure of an organ, the internal layers comprising that organ, and what is referred to as echogenicity, or the surface and color of abdominal organs.
So, in summary, radiology shows the overall structure or how each structure relates to its neighboring structures, while ultrasound reveals the details of each structure or its constitutive layers and surface.
Note: Neither of these two tools shows the function of organs and only reports on the color, location, size, and relationship of organs with one another. Do Pets Need Sedation for Ultrasound and X-rays?
Typically, no. Most animals calm down when placed in the situation and realize that the veterinarian and staff are there to help them and will not harm them. However, there are exceptions. For instance, very young and active animals or those that are abnormally anxious may need sedation to remain calm. Overall, it depends on your pet’s personality.
